Salvation is Not a Punch Card

Deep in each one of us dwells the question of eternity. For some, it lies buried under hardened layers of rejection, loss, anger, and doubt. For others, it’s suppressed by pride, independence, and self-sufficiency. Layers that look like “the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things,” according to Mark 4:19.

How Serious Should We Take Sin?

Do you know what I think? No, you don’t, so I’ll tell you. I don’t think we talk about sin enough. I don’t think we confess our sins like God wants us to. And I don’t think we really care. Sure, we seek God’s grace-filled forgiveness when we remember, but when we don’t remember, oh well. Better luck next time, I guess. Except when we read Jesus’ words in Mark 9:42-50 “oh well” is just not the tone.

  • Guess Who’s Watching the Church?

Devotional Scripture: Ephesians 3:10-13 Key Verse: “So that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 3:10 Part of motherhood is having someone watch you all the time. If I go to the bathroom someone is watching the door, awaiting my departure. If I start the mixer, someone is watching me within moments. If I get on the computer, there are eyes peering over my shoulder. If I simply walk into a different room, it’s a matter of seconds before someone follows. And it doesn’t end; at…

Devotional Scripture: Ephesians 1:11-14 Key Verse: “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.” Ephesians 1:11 I love surprising my kids with things. I have this dream of surprising them with a trip to Disney World. You know the whole wake up at three a.m. and throw them in the car like innocent captives who have no idea why they were just yanked out of bed with all their pillows and blankets, only to be trapped in a mini-van with two overly excited…

  • The One Thing You Should Eat Daily

I love food. I mean, what’s not to love? The taste, the satisfaction, the variety, the smell (most of the time). The delight of sweet and the sensation of salty. And when you mix the two. (Hold on, I need a minute.) Devotional Scripture: Exodus 16 Key Verse: “And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8:3 Then there’s breakfast. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, coffee. You know…

  • 5 Benefits to Keeping an Eternal Perspective

Everyday we have a choice to make. A choice to either view life through an earthly lens or an eternal one. And I’ve noticed the days I choose to peek through heaven’s window instead of my own, it’s beneficial to not only my head but my heart and mind and relationships. 1. It keeps me upright in an upside down world. Have you ever noticed the world is often backwards? Babies are born to families who could care less, while godly women weep with empty wombs. Success meets the wicked at every corner, while the righteous deal with endless frustration. Prosperity throws itself at the worldly, while the one who…

  • 5 Things Jesus Didn’t Do For You

It’s Easter. The time of year we set aside to remember what Jesus did for us – His sacrifice and His love. But have you ever paused to consider what Jesus didn’t do for you? 1. He didn’t stay in Heaven. Now I can understand going from earth to heaven. I’m looking forward to it. But Heaven to earth? No thanks. Yet Jesus didn’t hesitate. Leaving behind the blessed sound of angels calling “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts” (Is. 6:3). For words like, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” (John 19:15). And Jesus did it willingly, leaving the throne room of heaven glistening with crystal…
